about

The Olympic games are often linked to concepts of build-up, peak performance, and breakdown. We see this with the athletes themselves, but even more so with the infrastructure: buildings are erected (built-up), used briefly in their full glory (peaked), and then fall into oblivion and decay (breakdown). It is these concepts that inspired us to create this track.

The sounds you hear were taken from the 'Kankyō Ongaku' movement of the 1970s and 80s in Japan (roughly translated 'environmental music'). Japan was experiencing an economic boom at the time and electronic instruments made their entry into the Japanese music scene. Simultaneously with the emergence of the ambient subgenre in Europe, a subsequent music style developed in Japan, characterized by the use of traditional yet electronic sounds of Japanese folklore, and as being strongly inspired by buildings and architecture. In many cases, 'Kankyō Ongaku' was written as an assignment to 'brighten up' a public building.

Ambient music has also been used in the past as a performance-enhancer for athletes. The most famous is the 'Kosmischer Laufer' by Martin Zeichnete that was used to prepare athletes for the Olympic East German Athlete Team between 1972 and 1983.

'Tokyo 64' brings all these inspirations together, making a rhythmic yet atmospheric ambience influenced by traditional Japanese Music. Against the backdrop of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, this song comes from an alternate reality where Japan uses music as a performance enhancer rather than East Germany.
